Panthea nature trail: Spectacular views on an amazing trail

by Savvas Michail

Description

The Panthea nature trail is located on the road from Kykkos to Tsakistra and belongs to Nicosia district. It is a remote trail with beautiful views all over. It is a combination of a beautiful trail on the ridgeline of the mountain, a path on the mountain peaks with stunning views and gravel roads towards the villages under the shade of the tall pine trees. There are several options for hiking this trail with different routes ending either to Kampos or Tsakistra.

The route I did is the one avoiding the gravel roads and reaching the point where both trails (Loggers trail and Panthea) cross each other. The total distance is 7.2 km out-and-back. However there is an option to go either to Kampos or Tsakistra with distance of 7 km one way. The difficulty of the trail is difficult due to some steep sections of continuous uphill. The estimated hiking duration is 2 hours for the small one (7.2 km) and 3-4 hours for the 14 km.

Viewpoints

The trailhead has a beautiful refuge which is like jewelry hidden in open sight under the natural ombrella of the forest. The first 1.5 km is a normal narrow trail on the ridgeline of the mountain with continuous views to all directions depending on each section. The panoramic view offered is a sight for sore eyes!!!

Beyond the ridge, the trail culminates at a majestic peak offering a sweeping 360-degree panorama. From this vantage point, the twin mountain villages of Tsakistra and Kampos appear nestled among the lush Paphos forest. As the path broadens into a weathered, gravel-strewn road reminiscent of a forgotten mountain pass, you continue along the high crests before beginning your steady descent.

After a few kilometers we reach a junction where you can decide where to go, either Tsakistra or Kampos or both. At this point the path is an actual gravel road until the villages, with nice views!

Starting points

The trailhead is found on the road towars Tsakistra village. You will definitely see the refuge/shelder on your right side, while driving. The exact GPS location is provided at the GPS map.

It is worth mentioning that nearby is also the trailhead of the trail Gnafkio Natural Trail.

Personal comments

The first part of the trail is amazing!! The refuge/shelder at the beginning is magical and the trail on the ridgeline of the mountains offers stunning panoramic views. When the trail widens, it is also very nice since you are walking on top of the mountains and continuous scenic views.

However, when you reach the junction of choosing where to go, either Tsakistra or Kampos, the trail here is actually a gravel/forest road. Personally I don’t really like walking on gravel roads but this one is pleasant and definitely worth hiking.

My recommendation is to do the hike during winter time and preferably cloudy weather and park cars on both ends so you do the hike one way, if you are choosing option A or B.
